William Dunderdale
| Frederick
William Dunderdale was born in 1866 in Thorne. In 1871 he was living
with his widowed mother Rose Hannah Sophia and his brother Joseph Abbott
Dunderdale. His father Thomas died when he was only 2 yrs old.
On the 1881 Census
Frederick was lodging with the Hind family
At Southend Thorne. Mr
Hind was a railway labourer and Frederick
was a railway porter
aged 16.
At some time in his
life he was a Lieutenant in the army, but I do not know anything about
that.
Sometime between 1881
and 1888 he moved to Australia. There he married an Australian woman
called Beatrice Betteridge. She was born 20th June 1868 in Brompton,
South Australia. They were married 19th Sept 1888 in Benalla Victoria.
Frederick at this time
was working for a Gas installations company. They later sailed to New
Zealand, where he became manager of the Palmerston North gas works. They
lived there for 9 and a half years, until they sailed back to Albany in
Western Australia where he was in charge of building a new gas works.
Sadly after only a month there he died on the 2nd June 1899. He died of
Brights disease aged 34. His illness lasted 12 months. He left a wife
and four children, Wilfred, Reginald, Ethel, and Alba.

Bankers, Bank of New Zealand, Registered office, 11 Brandon Street,
Wellington. Secretary and general manager, Mr A.H. Truebridge. This
company was formed in 1891 to take over the works which had been
constructed by Coates and Co., Limited, of Melbourne, who supplied the
gas to the consumers for 18 months. They consist of suitable buildings
containing eleven retorts and two large gas-holders. About 1000 tons of
coal are used annually, the consumers having increased considerably
since the inception of the company. The energy and good management of
Mr. Dunderdale have resulted in placing the company in a splendid
position.
