The
Salter Family

|
Christabel
Salter was born 1st November 1872 at 2 Cheyne Row West, Chelsea. Her
father was James Salter a House Painter, and her mother was Eliza
Bussicott. Christabel had a older brother Alfred and a sister Ada. On
the 1871 census James, Eliza, Alfred and Ada were living at Pimlico,
London. By the time of the 1881 census Christabel had been born, she
was 9 years old and her sister Ada was 13, but they were not living
with there family, they were both down as a 'Nurse Child', living with
Emma Hancock a charwoman aged 49 and her nephew aged 9. So I am
thinking Eliza there mother has died and they are been looked after by
Emma. A Nurse Child is someone who is looked after by another woman a
bit like a modern day foster mother. Sometimes they were paid to do
it. I found a James Salter on the 1881 census lodging at 7 Grosvenor
Cottages, London, he was down as a widow so that ties in with Eliza's
death. When the 1891 census was taken James had remarried to a Mary
Balaam, also on the 1891 census Ada was working as a servant for a Mr
Leigh, who was the attendant of the Natural History Museum in London.
I am not sure where Christabel was or how she met my Great Grandad
Sidney, but she married him on 5th February 1901 and at the time of
Marriage they were both living at Moss near Doncaster. Christabel and
Sidney had two children Dolly (Dorothy) and Gladys. I have yet to find
out what happened to James, Alfred or Ada but will keep trying. |
